Below is a gallery of mineral specimens from the type locality where they were first discovered, available for sale from John Betts - Fine Minerals in New York City, NY. The type locality is where samples were acquired for a new mineral find, that provided the crystallographic analysis of the new mineral and becomes the baseline reference for that mineral species. Some old minerals do not have a type locality, because there existence predates early analysis techniques. These are "grandfathered" minerals. But most minerals do have a type locality and some collectors choose to collect only specimens of minerals from the type locality because that is the "purest" reference. The best reference for the type localities of mineral species is Fleischer's Glossary of Mineral Species 2008 which lists mineral formula, crystal system, and type locality for each mineral species. Sizes: (t) = Thumbnail, (m) = Miniature, (c) = Cabinet, (lc) = Large Cabinet
